The Perinatal HIV Research Unit (PHRU) was established in 1996. The Perinatal HIV Research Unit has been involved in research, training, policy formation and advocacy in issues concerning HIV-positive women and their children.In recent years the work of the unit has expanded beyond the original focus of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, to include treatment trials in adults and children, prevention research, psychosocial research and policy development. In addition the Unit has developed an HIV vaccine clinical trials unit (HVCTU) and started with HIV Vaccine Trials back in 2001.The unit is recognised nationally and internationally as a leader in the field of research and policy in the area of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. It has also developed a reputation as a leading African research unit for clinical trials in adult and children with HIV, with one of the largest cohort.
Main purpose of the job
To assist and ensure that the Tuberculosis (TB) study is conducted as per the prescribed protocol while maintaining “Good Clinical Practices” (GCP)

Key performance areas
To identify and consent eligible participants as specified by the study protocol
Maintain a schedule and ensure that all enrolled patients are followed up
Ensure that study activities are conducted as per the protocol and the South African Guidelines
Ensure that sputum collected are taken to laboratory timeously
Ensure to obtain all results and are acted on by an authorised medical professional
Ensure timeous referrals where necessary
Communicate routinely with the study coordinator and principal investigator
Do proper filing of results and any other study related documents in the relevant assigned place
Ensure that all good clinical practices are maintained by study team
Conduct and maintain oversight of the study and the study team
Ensure the smooth running of all study activities
Complete and submit reports timeously
Required minimum education and training
Qualified as an Enrolled Nurse
Professional body registration
Registered with the South African Nursing Council
Required minimum work experience
2 Years’ experience as an Enrolled Nurse
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities
Ability to lead and work independently as well as be part of a multidisciplinary team
Flexibility to adapt to changes in study requirements
Empathetic towards people living with HIV/AIDS & TB
Ability to speak local languages
Valid driver’s licence
Willingness to learn
