Makonde "Tree of Life" sculpture, also known as an Ujamaa sculpture

These sculptures are an indigenous art form of the Makonde people, an ethnic tribe residing in southeast Tanzania and northern Mozambique. They typically depict several interlocking human figures, symbolizing unity and continuity, and sometimes feature a lady at the very top. The origin of the "Tree of Life" style dates back to the 1950s.
