It’s no secret that you could end up saving a lot of money when you’re buying a used motorcycle (as apposed to a new one). You can still get much of the same value if you find a good deal. One of the most important things to be aware of when buying a second hand motorcycle is the inspection of the motorcycle itself.

This is a very important step when and it’s one that should not be taken lightly. If you have a friend who is very motorcycle-savvy then it’s ideal to take them along to see the motorcycle and ask all the important questions and do the relevant checks for you. If you are not so lucky, here are a few inspection tips:

  • Ask the seller of the motorcycle if the bike has been used in racing or not.
  • Look for any scratches or general poor condition.
  • Ask yourself “Does the look and condition of the motorbike match it’s year and it’s mileage?”
  • Make sure that you start the engine to listen how it sounds and look for any leaks
  • Ask the seller how many owners the bike has had in the past
  • Find out how old are the tyres are
  • Ask the seller why he / she is selling the motorcycle and if there is anything wrong with it
  • Be sure to take some riding gear along with you when you are going to look at the motorcycle. You can get a lot of information about the bike by giving it a quick test ride. This will also give you the best indication about the condition and handling of the bike.
  • Also note that you should shop around. Don’t buy the first bike that you see. Look around and compare many different bikes to get a good feeling of the price you would be looking to pay.
  • Keep in mind that bikes used for touring, racing and off-road will all require different checks as their parts will take different strain.
  • Also keep in mind that when buying a second hand motorcycle from a private seller there could be huge possibility that you can haggle down the price. Don’t just settle for the price as the seller will often drop the price if there is a guarantee of a sale.
