Mind Reading Experiment with Junk Mail

Posted on: March 12th, 2010 by Henno Kruger 162 Comments

Carefully follow the instructions below and Junk Mail will attempt to read your mind and tell you your answer:

  • Think of a number between 2 and 9
  • Multiply the number by 9
  • Add the two digits together
  • Subtract 5 from the number you now have
  • Convert the number into a letter - 1 = a, 2 = b, 3 = c, etc…
  • Think of a European Country starting with that letter
  • Now think of the second letter of that country
  • Think of an animal that starts with that letter (This must be an animal – not a bird – so if you are thinking of an eagle think again!)
  • What colour is your animal?
  • Now concentrate carefully on your answers!

Check below to see if Junk Mail has read your mind…. comment on this post and let us know if this is the correct answer

Your site is always interesting, quiz was great well done

    • Anonymous says:

Too easy to understand: we know since school and being 6 years old that the sum of the digit of any multiple of 9 is 9. Then Denmark is the only european country starting with the letter D – Elephant is not the only animal but the first you think about…

    • Anonymous says:

      What about Dublin? and Unicorn?

  4. Anonymous says:

Every number will end up at 9 so all answers will be the same after the first 5 steps, but well done you fooled me.

    Cheerio.

O my goodness!!! This was quite incredible. How do you do this or does everyone in the end think of grey elephants in Denmark! Thanks for the entertainment, it was quite special. Thanks also for your great service.

  8. Ockert du Plessis says:

Country correct but not animal. Was thinking of an Emoe. BUT how did you manage that?! Exellent way to pass the time.

    Thank you

    • David Small says:

What about an Orange Orangatang from the Dominican Republic?

Anyone that knows the 9 times table will easily be able to see how you got them to get a 4 leading to the letter D.

      Nice try!!

  9. Peter says:

The calculation always produces the result “4″, so the letter is always “d”.

There is only one European country starting with “D” = Denmark.

The second letter will always be “e”.

There are only two common animal names staring with “e” – elephant and eland so you have a 50% chance of getting it right.

The actual chance of a correct “read” will be higher since most people would think “elephant”.

    Very clever!

The number is always a 4 and that would make the letter a D. Denmark is the only EUROPEAN COUNTRY which starts with a D. The second letter of the country has to be an E. Elephant is the logic choice largest animal in your mind. I worry about some maths calculations, this was a simple addition and subtraction maths quiz !!!! Re-do the math pls

if your number was 4, the letter was D ur Dumbass, how the hell does your mind work if u cant even read correctly.

  54. Anonymous says:

any number between 2-9 will come as same result 4. and count yourself how many countries start from “d” in Europe?and how many animals name could start from “e”? then color jumps out your mind already……

  55. niniekies says:

    uhm, no!

  56. Anonymous says:

    not bad!

  57. Anonymous says:

Denmark yes, (Correct me if I’m wrong, but Denmark is the only European country starting with “D” (the inevitable calculation already explained by an anonymous person) in the english language,  excluding eg Duitsland (Germany in afrikaans))

And actually, I was thinking about an Eland… Or an Elk. Elephant would be too obvious. And the question is, if birds are excluded, are marine animals (eagle-ray, electric eel, etc)  and reptiles (egg eater snake, Ensatina, etc) too? And scientific names (Equus caballus – horse)?

Hmmm, couldn’t help but throw a spanner in the works ;) Cool trick though!

  58. Bernie says:

I was infact thinking of a slimy earthworm…hahahahaha…in Denmark.

  59. Bernie says:

    hahaha

Go back to school u fool !!!!!!

    4×9=36, 3+6=9, 9-5=4, 4=d & its not ditaly . Better luck next time haha .

  61. GVD says:

This trick worked from all aspects with me. I thought of an eagle and only after reading did I discover it may not be a bird. Yeah you always get 4 from the sum and Denmark is the most popular country not only in Europe, but for the whole world. Elephant is the most common animal that will come to mind, or maybe when you say E the first thing you think of is Eagle the next must be Elephant. You are not going to think of some difficult name, because you want to get the answer quickly. Unless you’re ignorant, heardheaded or just plain annoying. You shouldn’t be smart to get this trick working you must actually be an ordinary person who knows the color of an Elephant is not brown, but indeed grey.

    Being Modest

  62. Anonymous says:

    very good. im impressed.

  63. Anonymous says:

Uh . . . sure there is not a brown turtle in your brain  . . . not in Italy

  64. Anonymous says:

wrong…not a grey elephant in Denmark!  a black Rhino in France.

  65. Yogi says:

    Wrong answer.

Number would always work out to 4, which is letter D.

Denmark is not the only country starting with D.

I chose Dominican Republic. So animal would have to start with O e.g. Otter.

  66. Helene says:

  81. Anonymous says:

Nope, purple elk but yes, in Denmark, but as pointed out it’s the only European country that starts with D which is always the letter you come to from the maths part.

Seriously, people picked Dominican Republic (not in Europe) and DUBLIN?!!! That’s a city. The capital city of Ireland.

Maybe a geography lesson should be next!

  88. heather says:

This was really very good. I had a grey elephant in Denmark

  89. Pierre says:

I had “bruin eland” in Denmark.

Denmark because it was the first name for a “D” that sprang to mind, and then on  second thought I realised it is not in Europe. It is Scandinavian, but kept the name because Deutschland was then my choice and the first 2 letter is the same. And of course “eland”, I think, is not an english name but stuck to it becaise I am a Boertjie.

It is all fun though to advertise your wares.

  92. Judi says:

I was thinking of a ewe, which is a female sheep – you get a ram (male) and a ewe (female) and the colour is

off-white.  A “maiden” ewe has not had a lamb and an “open” ewe has had a lamb.

    So I outsmarted Junk Mail ……… and I’m a blonde !!!

  93. Berenice says:

    Your answer was correct…that’s freaky!!!

  94. Judi says:

I was thinking of a female sheep called a ewe, which is off-white in colour.  You get a “maiden” ewe (has not had a lamb)

and a “open” ewe (has had a lamb).   The male is a ram.

Wow, I outsmarted Junk Mail and I’m blond!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  95. Tinkie says:

Really good!!! I was  thinking of an eland in Denmark. I’m Afrikaans and English is my second language. It gave me a smile when I read the part that “eagle” couldn’t be used as animal.  So I realised that all the aswers will end up in a D and the only country will be Denmark..and, and and

I don’t think this works on people trying to be clever. Here I am referring to people that did not get Denmark as the country. Orange orangatang from the Dominican Republic? How did you get this answer? O yes, you started off with not knowing Europe. Do you even know where Europe is? You certainly don’t know where the Dominican Republic is. You are an orange orangatang, but probably not as clever.
