In 1973 Mercedes-Benz released a car onto the roads of the world that was described by many as the most best looking car Mercedes-Benz had made to date. The name of this car was the 450 SL. It has a sporty look and feel while still maintaining the elegance and class that Mercedes-Benz is known for.
It was especially the American version of the 450 SL that grab the attention of petrol heads around the world. The American version of this amazing piece of German engineering boasted with a 4.5 litre V8 engine. It was the elegance and class of Mercedes-Benz but strapped to a V8 engine that both intrigued and amazed fans of American muscle cars.
In 1977 they took the engine size up another level to a five litre, to mark this change the new car was named the 450 SLC. It was a new version of the old coupe but it had a brand new aluminium engine five-litre V8, aluminium alloy doors, hood and truck lid.
The classic shape of the SL has endured the test of time and even though it has had small changes over the years you can still see the original shape in the modern day 300 SL and 500 SL. In the 80’s and 90’s the SL shape moved back to a boxier feel, with clear corners and hard lines. But since 2002 we have seen the more curvy edges return. Lines are smoother and feel more like the original.
The 450 SL broke the mould in 1973 and it’s a collector’s item that any car enthusiast can be proud of. Muscle cars, sports coupes or roadsters, no matter what you prefer the 450 SL fits perfectly into any of these collections.
