Freedom Month 2014: 20 Years of Freedom

Freedom is widely accepted as the power or right to act, speak or think as one wants or not to be enslaved or imprisoned.

In April 1994, all South African citizens had the right to vote for the first time, regardless of their race, gender or beliefs. Twenty-years later we still celebrate April as Freedom Month to mark this momentous occasion.

Government is expected to pull out all the stops on 27 April 2014 to celebrate 20 Years of Freedom. Here is a list of some of the events planned for April:

1994 – First Democratic Elections are held in South Africa
1995 – Springboks win the Rugby World Cup
1996 – South African Constitution is adopted
1997 – National Anthem is adopted
1998 – TRC Final Report
1999 – Second Democratic Elections are held in South Africa
2000 – Coat of Arms is adopted
2001 – World Congress against Racism
2002 – Mark Shuttleworth is the first South African in space
2003 – Cricket World Cup
2004 – Third Democratic Elections are held
2005 – 50th Anniversary of the Freedom Charter
2006 – Same-sex unions legalised
2007 – Freedom Park Opens 2008 – Towards a 15-year review
2009 – First Mandela day
2010 – South Africa hosts the FIFA World Cup
2011 – Third consensus since Democracy
2012 – Nelson Mandela bank notes released
2013 – 1913 Natives’ Land Act Centenary
2014 – 20-years of Freedom celebrated
